Beyond the Arab awakening : Policies and investments for poverty reduction and food security
0
ifpri.org
–
This report aims to inform and stimulate the debate on key policy priorities for poverty reduction and food security in light of the Arab Awakening. Its findings are based on an innovative combination of datasets and rigorous economic analysis. Results suggest that poverty and income inequality in the Arab world are likely higher than official numbers have long suggested. Given that poverty indicators seem to be misleading for many countries in the region, the report introduces a new welfare

How agricultural research is funded, organized, controlled and practised can have a huge impact on small-scale producers in the global South. This briefing explains how a series of farmer assessments and citizens’ juries in West Africa has helped farmers assess existing approaches and articulate recommendations for policy and practice to achieve their own vision of agricultural research. In 2012, a high-level policy dialogue between farmers and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa

This issue focuses on local knowledge preserved in the almost forgotten flood legend from Arso, Keerom, Papua Province, Indonesia. The authors argue that local risk management knowledge is printed in cultural 'media' such as legends and myths. The local knowledge provides clues on human-environment relations in the past that is almost forgotten which can be beneficial for present generation.

Farms and funds

Investment funds show a growing interest in farmland and agriculture. They are buying up land and agribusinesses in developing countries with the expectation of high long-term returns linked to rising land prices, growing populations and increasing demand for food. While the media has reported extensively on the involvement of these funds in the global land rush, the mechanics remain little understood by the broader public. What is the interest and what is driving it? Who are the players and

Impact of Conflict on Children’s Health and Disability
0
unesdoc.unesco.org
–
Conflict impacts children’s health in four important ways. First, conflict‐driven displacement increases child death and injury, mainly through increased susceptibility to infectious disease from unsanitary living conditions. A case study on Southern Sudan illustrates that conflict reduces sanitation, clean water, and health services making it difficult to stop the spread of neglected tropical diseases, such as visceral leishmaniasis and trachoma. Second, children have a higher risk of food

The Internet raised hopes that knowledge might become more accessible, reaching less affluent groups, as well as those farther away from the producers and sources of information. These early expectations remain largely unrealised. Knowledge institutions, including producers and distributors, around the world remain concentrated.“Who controls Wikipedia entries?” The good old times when anyone could intervene and share knowledge on this medium are long gone. Nowadays Wikipedia is based on a
